The Actress Says Discussing Donald Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ Dividing the Nation Apart

Jennifer Lawrence has declared that she believes it's no longer suitable to speak out regarding the Trump presidency, worried it could worsen unhelpful debate and further divisions across the nation.

‘I Don’t Really Know If I Should’, Explains Lawrence

In a recent interview, she shared, “During the first Trump administration, I felt like I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. But it’s become clear, over multiple voting cycles, public figures fail to influence at all on voter decisions.”

She continued, “Why continue? I’m just voicing my thoughts on a matter that’s going to worsen tensions dividing the nation apart.”

Changing Allegiances

Lawrence has spoken candidly about supporting conservative and liberal presidential nominees throughout her life. Growing up with Republican parents in Kentucky, she supported John McCain in 2008 prior to switching to the Democrats and explaining she understood during the Obama era that backing conservatives was undermining her personal freedoms as a woman.

Past Statements

Earlier in her career, she stated that a Trump victory would be “the end of the world” and endorsed Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race. More recently, she voiced her backing to Vice President Harris, “since I believe she’s a strong contender and I trust that she will do whatever she can to protect reproductive rights.”

Hollywood’s Stance

Jennifer Lawrence was aligned with most of Hollywood in her rejection of Trump as a returning figure, but the lack of leverage celebrities have over the electoral decisions was highlighted by his election win.

“The second term seems distinct,” noted she of his administration. “As he stated his intentions. We knew what he did for four years. He was explicit. And that’s the option selected.”

New Release

The actor is highlighting her new film, director Lynne Ramsay’s movie in which she stars as a young mom who faces challenges with her emotional state in a remote area. At a press conference for the film in the film festival, Lawrence spoke about Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “I’m terrified. It’s horrifying. What’s occurring is no less than a atrocity and it’s terrible.”

Broader Concerns

Lawrence added by stating that she was disappointed by “the hostility in the discussions of American politics at present and how that is going to be commonplace to the kids today. It’s going to be standard to them that politicians lie.”

Lawrence attempted to refocus outrage about the situation to leaders rather than actors and artists. “Keep attention on the people in charge,” she remarked, which was interpreted as a nod to the then-recent pledge endorsed by more than 4,000 Hollywood professionals to avoid certain cultural organizations.

Relatable Experiences

Jennifer Lawrence, who won an Oscar at a young age for her part in the acclaimed film, is attracting awards attention for her work in the new film. Even though Ramsay has disputed the narrative being interpreted as one of post-birth struggles and psychological distress, the actress said that she connected with parts of her role’s experience after the arrival of her new baby, shortly after shooting ended.

“It was fear about my child,” she said, “envisioning every worst-case scenario, and then second-guessing everything that I was attempting. I was already in therapy, but I started taking a medication called Zurzuvae and I took it for a short period and it really helped.”

Career Moments

Jennifer Lawrence also spoke of the liberating necessity of filming without clothes in the film while she was in pregnancy and unable to exercise.

“It’s refreshing,” she remarked, of being forced to cast off vanity. “Honestly, I occasionally wonder where I’m like, What separates me between myself and a sex worker? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
