Edwards along with O'Neil represent the initial names under consideration to replace Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was dismissed on the weekend following the squad's ten-game winless beginning to the Premier League campaign.
And Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic associations to the team - are part of the names to be considered by the Wolves ownership.
Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a potential obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
However the former Luton head coach - who made over a century of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is considered a leading candidate for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the Wolves board as they start the search of appointing a fresh head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected candidate, even though he would be a shock appointment given he was sacked by the club in December last year.
The ex- West Ham United midfielder is out of work which means the club would not need to pay any buyout fee.
