Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the board at OpenAI, just several days after a batch of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.
He remarked in an announcement that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and eagerly await tracking their progress".
Summers, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, declared on recently that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his association with Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public emails showed that the economist communicated with the financier until the eve of Epstein's 2019 detention for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it accepted his decision to resign.
"We value his significant contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," OpenAI commented.
Political Context
This development arrives after the two houses of the legislative branch voted on this week to endorse a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will subsequently proceed to the administration of President Trump for signature. Trump has stated he intends to approve the bill, after changing his position on the issue following objections from his supporters.
Message Details
A collection of financier-linked emails made public by the House Oversight Committee days ago mentioned numerous high-profile figures in the financier's former circle, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The communications showed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often attempting to link the official to influential global figures.
Personal Response
After the emails were released with the public, Summers said he took "total ownership for my misguided decision to persist in corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he wanted "to rebuild confidence and repair relationships with the persons closest to me".
Professional History
Summers served in senior posts under party leaders; serving as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He led Harvard from five years and continues to be a academic there. When announcing his withdrawal from public roles earlier on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning policy institute in DC where he was a prominent member, confirmed that the economist was not connected with the institution.
The former official entered the directorate of the AI company, which develops the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to oust its CEO the company leader.
