Celebratory Displays along with a Cheer for Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice at Deal Bringing Back Hostages
The declaration regarding a deal projected to lead to the freeing of hostages detained within Gaza for over 24 months has caused joy and comfort across Israel.
A group that has advocated for the return of Israeli captives in Gaza expressed “deep appreciation” for what it called an “historic breakthrough”.
The agreement—still requiring approved by the Israeli war cabinet—will see the return of 20 living hostages as well as the remains of 28 dead hostages in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners imprisoned for life in Israeli jails plus 1,700 individuals from the Gaza region.
To date, 148 hostages have been returned—largely through earlier truce agreements—51 sets of remains have been retrieved and eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Jubilant Scenes in Hostages’ Square
Joyous gatherings took place at Hostages Square located in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals assembled ahead of the agreement’s signing.
The gathering started applauding and moving to music under US and Israeli flags—a female attendee holding up a sign saying: “We love Trump.”
“This is a wondrous day,” the woman said.
A different person, Yael, aged 50, wept as she watched the crowd dancing.
“I’m very excited—it is such a comfort,” she stated. “We need to see their return home to their loved ones.”

Relatives Rejoice with Fireworks
The mother and sister of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker set off fireworks to mark the announcement of his impending returned home.
“They are returning!... Matan is on his way home!” Einav Zangauker said while holding her daughter.
Viki Cohen, the mother of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, shared online: “My child, you are coming home.”
The joy could be felt throughout the avenues in Tel Aviv following the announcement.
Freed Hostages Offer Prayers and Raise Glasses
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari celebrated with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then cheering “L’chaim”, meaning “for life”. She has been campaigning for the release of her companions, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their brother Liran Berman wrote: “My Gali and Ziv, I love you so much. You are coming back.”
The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was taken hostage on 7 October 2023, and her body recovered from an underground passage in Gaza almost a year later. He has participated with other hostage families in advocating for an agreement that brings the return of all those still being held in Gaza.
“I can’t quite believe this is real. We’ve been waiting for so long and now it’s here,” he said.
He stated he was “broken” that Carmel will not be among those coming back home yet felt “radiant with happiness” for the relatives of the captives who are finally coming back.
Eitan Horn was seized from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel along with his brother.
Guarded Hope from Family Members
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, said she experienced like she was living “in a dream”.
“We are immensely thankful to the President and everything he has done for us. It seems that this could be the start of the conclusion of this ordeal, and hugging Eitan seems nearer than before,” she said.
But she cautioned that it was still too soon to rejoice.
“Until the last hostage is here, we won’t open the bubbly. We’re going to keep fighting... until the end,” she affirmed.
“So many things might occur until the last moment which is why we’re being so, so careful. We simply wish to express gratitude to all who participated in the work and ensure this agreement is done... We will celebrate only once we have the last hostage safely home.”
Eitan was captured from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south along with his brother Iair, who was freed from captivity through a truce agreement earlier this year.
