Three members of law enforcement perished and at least 15 additional individuals were hurt in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

The detonation occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the residence close to Verona to carry out an removal notice for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto area, the regional head, said the residence was under an court order due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.

Mediators had been dispatched to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the residents triggered the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Claudio Papagno told the media.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the explosion directly hit our officers,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the minister said.

Injured individuals by the explosion included 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The official thought the detonation had happened on a floor above the entrance and stated to journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the blast, he revealed members had “heard a whistle, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.
